Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Sextet

ABOUT THIS YEAR'S ARTIST: The Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Sextet was founded in Madison, WI in 1998 and has been entertaining audiences throughout the Midwest with their renditions of classic and original Latin Jazz ever since. Voted Madison's Favorite Jazz Band six years in a row by the "Isthmus Readers Poll" (2000-2006), and recipient of two "Madison Area Music Awards" a.k.a. "MAMAS" (2005-2006) as Madison's best Latin artist and best Latin album (Viva el Cardinal), the Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Sextet continues to impress and entertain audiences wherever they play.
The Tony Castaneda Latin Sextet Band has been a favorite at the Isthmus Jazz Festival, Live at Five and other local venues and festivals and has performed and demonstrated Latin music for a number of public schools in an effort to expose more people to Latin music. The band's tight sound has also been honed by over eight years worth of free weekly Sunday night gigs at the Cardinal Bar in Madison, Wisconsin. The TCLJS has performed with some of the international stars in Latin jazz such as Grammy award winning trumpeter/percussionist Jerry Gonzalez of the Fort Apache Band, Grammy award winning Cuban Percussionist Roberto Viscaino of the Chucho Valdez Group, and Orlando "Maraca" Valle along with several members of his band.
The band invited New York City vocalist Carolyn Leonhart of Steely Dan to join in their 2001 appearance at Madison's Isthmus Jazz Festival. The band has also opened for and played with a number of famous Latin Jazz musicians including Tito Puente, conguero virtuoso Giovanni Hidalgo, Los Munequitos, bassist Johnny Benitez, John Santos and Omar Sosa, Poncho Sanchez, Los Lobos, the band War and most recently, piano legend Eddie Palmieri.
ABOUT THE CONCERT: On May 1, 2011, the Friends will celebrate the 16th year for this event, with proceeds to date netting close to $200,000.
Many programs at the Waisman Center have been positively impacted by this benefit. A few examples: Scholarships for children who attend the Waisman Early Childhood Program, a model laboratory school serving a developmentally diverse population. Stipends that enable families to participate in Waisman Center research projects or educational events. Special projects, such as the remodelling and upgrading of the Waisman Center's clinical space, which serves hundreds of children with disabilities and their families each year.
Staged in the Friends of the Waisman Center Auditorium on the UW-Madison campus, the concert hall seats 250 people. A catered reception with the artists moves to the top floor of the Waisman Center complex, with panoramic views of the west area of the UW-Madison campus.
Performers in the series are some of the Madison areas most popular artists, including jazz greats Ben and Leo Sidran, distinguished classical pianist Jeffrey Siegel (famous for his "Keyboard Conversations"), and the effervescent Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society.
Major support for this event comes from in-kind donations of printing, wine, piano loan and moving, and host donations at the Silver ($250), Gold ($500) and Platinum ($1,000) levels. In addition, a sponsor for the artists has been identified for 2011, former Chancellor John D. Wiley. An event sponsor option is also available $2,500 "Event Sponsors" at $2,500 each.
