  • It is time for the quarterly Java update, and Oracle has released version JRE8 update 45; we are rolling it out this weekend to Waisman PCs. Since JRE7, many have had trouble with improperly certified web applications. If that is you, please contact Help@Waisman.Wisc.Edu and we will get you back on track. 4/17/2015
  • For a couple weeks now, Waisman PCs (with some exceptions) are under a new Weekly Maintenance Restart policy. The restarts include a 5 minute warning, and could occur any time Thursday evening or early Friday morning. They are currently scheduled to happen between 2:00AM and 2:30AM Friday mornings. Accordingly, it is a good idea to save your work and Log off at the end of your work day. 4/14/2015

  • A new version of Symantec Endpoint Protection is being pushed out to Waisman PCs this week from DoIT. The updates have been scheduled to occur sometime between 7:00 PM and 2:30 AM, but it is uncertain which day will be picked for each PC. If prompted, you will have the ability to postpone the update, which will include a restart. 10/21/2014
  • New users added after Aug 7, 2014 will not have letters assigned to shared network drives. Instead of a drive mapped to a letter, the drive name will appear as a shortcut under the "Computer:" icon when browsing for files. The drive names will not change. The personal or home drive will still be mapped to letter M.

  • The UW Campus has established an Enterprise Term License Agreement (ETLA) for use of Adobe software products for three years! This includes Adobe Acrobat Pro, and most of the popular Creative Suite products. We have already done a full roll-out of Acrobat Pro for all Waisman PCs. Other Adobe products will be updated, and can be installed by request. This money saving deal is only available to UW-owned machines. For personally owned machines, there is a $20 bargain available to UW Faculty and Staff. 3/12/2014
  • The POP email service (once used by the old Eudora client) has been shut down for security reasons. If you use an external e-mail client that is configured for POP, please use IMAP instead. 3/5/2014

  • The old Eudora e-mail client is being removed from all Waisman PCs today. Did you know that Eudora Welty completed her studies in English Literature here at the University of Wisconsin? Her short story, "Why I live at the P.O.", 1941, was the inspiration for the developer of our beloved e-mail program to give it her name. 10/1/2013

  • Thinking of using DropBox? Aside from surrendering ownership of the files you place there, you may need to be concerned about the security of all the computers that connect to your file sharing areas.   • Self-service updates for remote or personally owned machines. Since the recent Java Zero-Day exploit, Waisman Computing Services staff have worked hard to protect all the machines used by Waisman personnel. This includes machines outside of the Waisman Center--ones you have at home, and others you carry from place to place. Please see FAQ 914 for instructions on how to keep your own computers up-to-date. 9/18/2012
  • An extension called OpenAttachmentByExtension has been added to Thunderbird on all Waisman PCs. This add-on is a work-around for folks who get attachments from colleagues that use Outlook to send Microsoft Office documents. Outlook uses the wrong format when assembling the message and this add-on will cause that formatting to be ignored, opening the attachment by the filename extension instead. 2/11/2013

  • A new Webmail application called Atmail is now available but only for those that have moved to the 'new' mailserver. It's intended to replace Soymail. To request moving to the 'new' mailserver (which handles large maiboxes with ease), please email Move me to the new mailserver. Eventually, everyone will be moved but we're encouraging anyone to volunteer, particularly if you have a large mailbox or just want to try out Atmail. 6/5/2012

  • Macintosh clients running Office 2008 or 2011 cannot open Excel files saved in "Excel 97-2004 Workbook (.xls) format" from network drives as of 1/29/12. You can copy these files to a local drive or your desktop and then save them in Excel native format (.xlsx) on network drives without issues. This has been submitted to HP for a solution. 2/20/2012

Instead they will appear in your discard area with a spam score of 100 as will all messages with scores of more than 50 If the sender is on your allowlist the message will be delivered directly to your inbox.
