I have an ongoing professional interest in supporting mental health issues for persons with developmental disabilities. My career began in 1975 at the Adler Mental Health Center, a short term-intensive treatment program for children with emotional and developmental challenges. Over a seven year period I provided direct care, clinical supervision and eventually became Program Director. My graduate studies in Educational Psychology were also integrated as Adler was an affiliate to the University of Illinois in Champaign. In 1980 I began a position as Behavioral Treatment Director to a community-based residential program for 96 adults with disabilities. From 1986 to the present I have been on staff at the Waisman Center. I developed a program titled “Community TIES” which provides outreach behavioral consultation to persons with disabilities living in the community. I developed a series of seminars on positive behavioral supports that have been offered extensively across Wisconsin. In 2003 I also assumed administrative responsibilities for all activities at the Waisman UCEDD Olin Avenue location which includes a range of innovative programs that support Community Inclusion for persons with disabilities living in Dane County. Dane County and the Waisman Center have had a long standing productive relationship. This relationship fosters a “real world” arena to develop “best practice” programs that can be replicated in other communities.
