CPU stands for Central Processing Unit and
is the part of the computer that performs math and manipulation of data
in memory. MHz (megahertz) refers to the clock speed of the microprocessor.
In general, the larger the number, the faster the computer will run applications,
especially math-intensive operations. Note that overall speed at
which a 3000-MHz CPU runs applications is not necessarily 50 percent
faster than a 2000-MHz CPU.
Fans are provided by Intel with the Processor, however some people have found
the fan noise of 3.0 Ghz processors and faster to be objectionable in some
rooms and conditions. We offer the following low noise fan which we
recommend for high speed processors

Memory (RAM) is the temporary storage your computer uses
to run the operating system and application programs. It's measured in
megabytes
(MB); one megabyte is roughly one million bytes (one byte is needed
to store a single character). While 256 MB is sufficient for most
applications, 512 MB will make some applications run faster and will allow
you to have even more applications running concurrently. Note that the
contents of memory disappear when your computer is turned off, and that
memory is distinct from hard disk space (also measured in megabytes).

of repetitive-stress injuries. All the keyboards have keys that are for
use in Windows. These keys are not necessary but may be a convenience
for some users.

"How to clean your MouseRug
MouseRugs may be hand washed with mild soap by applying the soap to a clean sponge or cloth and scrubbing the fiber surface.
Avoid washing the fringe to maintain its original appearance.
Rinse (again avoiding the fringe if possible) and then place on a flat surface to air dry. You will find that with repeated washings
the MouseRug will become softer and softer to the touch.
Unlike mouse pads, with normal use and care, Lextra MouseRugs will easily last many, many years while retaining their original appearance and functionality.
We don't know how long they last, actually, because we've been making Lextra MouseRugs for more than 5 years and have never seen one wear out
or lose its original appearance!"
What size hard disk would you like?
Hints on selecting a hard drive: Select a drive with enough room for the operating system and applications (about 2 - 3 Gb as delivered)
plus any applications you need to add and the documents or data you need to store. If you get a 2nd hard drive for backup purposes, this
second drive will typically be the larger. Expect to store 3 to 5 or more copies of your documents or data and no applications on
your 2nd backup drive. Typical sizes might be 40 Gb for the 1st drive and 60 - 120 Gb for the 2nd. These are just guidelines, anything is possible.

The hard disk drive provides permanent storage for the
operating system, applications programs, documents, and other data files.
The larger the hard disk, the more software and files you can keep on your
computer. Hard disk size is measured in megabytes (MB - roughly millions
of bytes) or gigabytes (GB - roughly billions of bytes). Keep in mind that
if your computer is connected to the network you will want to store your
critical documents and data files on your Waisman Network drive because
these are automatically backed up to tape every night.
Under some circumstances it is not practical to keep large amounts of
data on a network drive. When this is the case you can get protection from
hard drive failure by utilizing a second hard drive as a backup device
for your first hard drive.
Would you like a Second Hard Disk for backup or additional storage?

configurations if you desire. Please contact us at 3-5937 for more information.

Jaz or Zip drive.
A Zip drive will give you the ability to backup
or transport relatively large amounts of data. The Zip drive
has removable media, like a floppy drive (1.44 Mb), but unlike a floppy
drive, a Zip cartridge can hold about 100 Mb, 250 Mb, or 750Mb depending on the drive
and media.

Floppy disk drives are used to copy software onto your
hard disk or copy files onto diskettes for transport to other computers.
The use of floppy diskettes to distribute new software is being supplanted
by CD's. The 5¼ -inch diskettes are obsolete.

CD-ROM, or CD-ROM to be described later.
The CD-ROM's we use are typically Mitsumi, Plextor or Sony
depending on availability. A single CD-ROM disc can hold 650 MB. Thus,
they are used for distributing new software and huge
libraries of files (such as clip art and fonts). The 54x means Fifty-four speed
and is a common CD-ROM drive speed used today. Note that CD-ROMs
can be used only to read pre-recorded programs and data; but CD-RW will allow you to store
data on a CD-ROM as you can on a hard disk or floppy diskette. Getting
a CD-ROM drive is highly recommended since it greatly facilitates installing
new software.

What type of modem would you like?
US Robotics 56.6 V.92 - Voice Internal Modem ($39)
No Modem, or Modem to be described later
A modem allows your computer to access other computers
via an ordinary telephone line. In general, a modem is unnecessary if your
computer is connected to the network. A modem would probably be necessary
only for a computer installed at home.
Would you like a Printer?
Note that within the Waisman Center, most systems print to
a networked printer and so do not require a local printer. The printers
listed below can be networked, and are recommended for use within the center.
Inkjet technology and personal printers are sometimes used within the center,
but are not recommended for most applications as they are not designed
for the heavy printing loads common on most printers within the center.

Caution! The following printers cannot be integrated
with the Waisman Network. They can be connected to a PC and
shared via Windows networking. This means that if connected to a PC
that is running, they can be accessed from other Windows networked PC's,
but they cannot be accessed from a VMS terminal. If the need to access
this printer from VMS or without a host PC will ever be necessary during
the life of the printer, select one of the printers above with an 'N' suffix.

Which operating system would you like?
Windows XP Pro with Waisman Network Connection ($150)
A Windows XP networked configuration includes Windows XP and media, and department licenses for Office XP,
Corel Office 2002, web browsing, email, and other utilities.
Please Note: Windows XP has many features and advantages that older systems do not have.
However, to run an application while in a network domain environment such as we have at Waisman, the applicaton must run in 'User'
not 'Administrator' mode. Older applications and some newer ones do not meet this requirement. We can usually configure such
software so it will work, but this may not be possible in all instances. Older peripherials such as printers
or scanners may not have XP drivers available and so may not work, or the XP drivers that are available
may not work in 'User' mode. In this case, the peripheral may have to be replaced. Also if a group of people work closely together
it may be disruptive to have one with a different operating system. In this case, we suggest that you determine if upgrading the
others is practical. Such an upgrade is usually practical with Pentium II or higher PCs, though a new hard drive and more memory
may be needed. Feel free to discuss your needs with Waisman Computing staff to help with your decision.

system Software, or System to be described later
The operating system is the software that performs
many of the "housekeeping" tasks of running a computer, like organizing
files, starting application software, and controlling the various peripheral
devices.
In the above list of options, license only means
that the operating system comes installed only on the computer's hard disk;
you receive no diskettes or CD-ROMs and no documentation. By with media
we mean that the operating system is installed on the hard disk, but you
get the original diskettes or CD-ROMs and any documentation included by
the manufacturer.
