Over the weekend of January 24 and 25, 2009, DoIT made some changes to the servers that support VPN connections to the UW Campus Network.
People using older installations of the Cisco VPN Client software and/or people using Static connection profiles could no longer establish a connection to the servers.
What to check before fixing the problem
If you use a static connection profile (so that your PC always uses the same IP address once connected), be sure to make note of your special NetID used for logging in to the VPN server.
For example, I use "dswiggum_1" instead of my normal "dswiggum" NetID.
Update your connection profiles
Download new connection profiles from HERE and extract the files to this folder on your remote computer:
You may need to overwrite the ones that are already there.
Switch to the appropriate default connection profile
Within the VPN Client, you should right-click on the appropriate connection profile and select "Set as the Default Connection Profile".
This should be either "WiscVPN-Static" or "WiscVPN-Dynamic".
We no longer recommend using the connection profiles with "Campus" somewhere in the name.
If your installation is recent enough, your default connection will stay the same.
Still not working?
If the suggestion above does not work for you, please bring the computer in to Waisman Computing Services, and we will bring the VPN installation up to date.
You may lack administrative access on the PC, or need a newer version of the VPN Client software to be installed.
Additionally, there are adjustments to the installation that we normally perform in order to allow the PC to work better with the Waisman domain. Details of this configuration are beyond the scope of this FAQ.
