Title: Responding to unexpected situations in research settings.
Faculty moderators: Richie Davidson,
Katie Hustad
Student moderators: Andrea Mcduffie, Catherine Norriss, Kelly Kovac
Our panel will lead a discussion about how researchers can think about and deal
with discovery of unexpected issues/findings that emerge in the course of a
research study (e.g., discovering that an infant may be deaf in the course of a
perceptual study, abnormal findings in a brain imaging study, a child reporting
previously undisclosed emotional concerns in an interview, learning that a
participant may not be receiving “best practices” care, etc). What is the
responsibility of the researcher in these different kinds of situations? What
procedures should students have in place before beginning a study?
Where: Ziemann A, 8th Floor, South Tower
Readings: Ethical and practical
considerations in managing incidental findings in functional magnetic resonance
imaging.
Discovery and Disclosure of Incidental
Findings in Neuroimaging Research
Ethical Consideration of Incidental Findings on
Adult Brain MRI In Research

About the Series:
The Waisman Center is sponsoring this series of didactic seminars for
graduate and post-doctoral students. Each month, distinguished faculty
researchers will present some issues for consideration, and then with the help
of pre- and post-doctoral students who hold fellowships on various NIH-training
grants, will generate discussion on a variety of ethical issues.
Each session will last 90 minutes. Participants are invited to bring a brownbag
lunch, and the Waisman Center will provide coffee and cookies. Please contact
Lisa Nanstad if you plan to attend so that we can ensure that the room will
accommodate everyone comfortably.

Center Research Ethics Series is partially
funded by the NIH grant P30 HD03352.
