Evan Eichler, PhDDate: May 10, 2007 (Thursday)

Time: Noon to 1:00

Title:  “Genome Structure, Copy Number Variations, and Human Disease”

Speaker: Evan Eichler, PhD
University of Washington, Seattle

About the Speaker:
Evan Eichler, a HHMI Investigator at the University of Washington in the Department of Genomic Sciences, is giving a noontime talk today. Dr. Eichler is a leading genomic researcher, who specializes in looking at segmental duplications (SDs) as a driving force in speciation. SDs are large regions (8-100s of kb) that are nearly identical, and are interspersed throughout the human genome. Recombination between these segments, whether they reside on the same chromosome or on different ones, results in large scale chromosome rearrangements. Dr. Eichler is now looking at the contribution of SD-mediated rearrangements in human diseases, including ones that cause mental retardation and diabetes. He has evidence for this type of event in a number
of mental retardations. In this work, he is primarily using genomic arrays to detect copy number variations. This work is identical to the approach that Dr. Eli Hatchwell described last year, but is further along in its connection with known human diseases.
