Title: "Recent Advances in our Understanding of Protein & Amino Acid Requirement in Health & Disease"

Speaker:
Paul Pencharz, MB, ChB, PhD, FRCP(C)
The Hospital for Sick Children

About the Talk: All of the dietary essential amino acid except for histidine have been determined using IAAO.  Since our approach is also minimally invasive we have also applied it to children.  We have shown in 6-10 year old children that the requirement estimates are essentially identical to the adult requirement and hence are an estimate of maintenance requirement.  Therefore for a child a growth component has to be added to the maintenance value.   We have also been able to apply IAAO to define requirements in patients with Maple Syrup Disease and Phenylketonuria as well as children with liver disease.
