Leonard Abbeduto, PhD, associate director for behavioral sciences at the Waisman Center is the new editor for the American Journal on Mental Retardation (AJMR), one of the top three journals in special education and rehabilitation according to the latest industry impact factor rankings. Top Special Education and Behavioral Science Journal Gets New Editor
Language and fragile X syndrome expert, Dr. Leonard Abbeduto, foresees a multidisciplinary journal engaging the next generation of researchers in developmental disability
Dr. Leonard Abbeduto, an expert in language disorders, fragile X, and autism at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, is new Editor for the American Journal on Mental Retardation (AJMR) published by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD). For over 100 years, AJMR has reported groundbreaking research in intellectual and developmental disability, and has consistently ranked among the top three special education journals. A strong focus on behavioral research, inter-disciplinary content, and high scientific standards have contributed to maintaining AJMR's rankings, explains Dr. Abbeduto.
"It's a particularly exciting time to be Editor of AJMR, given the new advances in genetics and brain imaging that offer unprecedented insights into the causes and consequences of developmental disabilities," Dr. Abbeduto says. "AJMR has a critical role to play in reporting this new research in a way that respects and improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families." E xplaining his vision for AJMR, Dr. Abbeduto foresees a more interdisciplinary journal, welcoming new technologies and methods from genetics and neuroscience, in addition to traditional behavioral sciences research. Also a priority for Dr. Abbeduto is engaging young researchers as associate editors of AJMR and including their innovative research in the journal.

Dr. Abbeduto was chosen as Editor of AJMR after an international search conducted by a committee of researchers specially appointed by AAIDD. Dr. Abbeduto takes over editorship of AJMR from Dr. William E. MacLean, Jr. at the University of Wyoming.
