About the PEPPER Font
The PEPPER Font is a set of phonetic symbols and special characters for use in word processing documents. The Font includes 43 regular and bold symbols for all of the American English consonants, vowels, and diphthongs, and 45 diacritic symbols and special characters. The symbols in the PEPPER Font were first described in a phonetics text for students in communicative disorders and were subsequently incorporated in a speech analysis package titled PEPPER. To distinguish this font from other fonts containing IPA symbols, it was titled the PEPPER Font. The first published version of the PEPPER Font was a monospaced font created for WordPerfect 5.1 and WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS. Version 1 is only available from Allyn & Bacon at nominal cost.
In response to many requests, we are pleased to make a version of the PEPPER Font available as freeware to colleagues who frequently use phonetic symbols in documents. To download the font, see the Installation Instructions link on the left. Version 2 is a TrueType proportionally spaced font designed for Microsoft Windows applications. As of November 2000, we have also released a variation of the TrueType PEPPER Font called PEPPER sans Diacritics. This version of the font includes the 43 regular and bold symbols for all of the American English consonants, vowels, and diphthongs, as well as the special characters, but does not include the 45 diacritic symbols. We decided to make this streamlined version of the PEPPER Font available for simplified use in documents where diacritics are not needed.
Macintosh
PEPPER Font does work on Macintoshes. For OS X, copy the four *.ttf files (pep.ttf, pep2.ttf, pepb.ttf and pep2b.ttf) to the Mac Font Library. Unfortunately, if you run into trouble installing the PEPPER Font on a Macintosh we cannot help because we don't have any Macintoshes.
Question: I am trying to download the pepper fonts on a Macintosh 10.4.8 for a class that I am currently taking. The instructions on your website will not work.
Answer: Describe what is going wrong. Can you download the four font files to your desktop? Can you find the Mac Font Library? Can you move the files into that folder? If not, do you have administrative access to your computer? If so, are the fonts not showing up in your word processor even though they are in the Mac Font Library? If that's the case, what word processor are you using?
Question: I tried downloading the pepper font files numerous times but it wouldn't let me. I get redirected to a website with a list of text and symbols--so, it wasn't downloading on my computer at all.
Answer: When you download a font, you need to right click on the link. If you have a one-button mouse, hold down a Ctrl key and click on the link. Then select "Download linked file..." in Safari or "Save link as..." in Firefox from the popup menu.
