Room Reservation Request
Waisman Early Childhood Research Laboratories

What are the Waisman Early Childhood Research Laboratories?

The Waisman Early Childhood Research Laboratories consist of 7 rooms on the East corridor of the Waisman Annex which runs between the current MRI clinical operation and the Waisman Early Childhood Program. The seven rooms include 2 small interior (windowless) offices, approximately 100 square feet each. Adjacent to these offices are 5 sound-attenuated chambers, with interior dimensions ranging from 8 ft x 8 ft to 8ft x 10 ft. There are windows in the walls between the chambers, such that each room has a view into its nearest neighbor. Two of the chambers have windows that allow a view of the WECP gymnasium. Each chamber has a lockable door onto the corridor. All 7 rooms have high-speed connections to the Waisman Computing Network. Each room has a lock, and is individually keyed. Key use is coordinated by WECP staff, which also coordinates room scheduling.

The chambers are extremely well sound insulated. While it would not be correct to call them "sound proof", they are as close to that as modern technology allows. There should be no sound intrusion into the chambers from either the gym or the corridor, and isolation of one chamber from another is equally good. Each chamber has the capability for flexible electrical connections with the chamber immediately adjacent to it, to accommodate control of equipment, audio and video recording, etc.

Each of the interior offices is normally furnished with a workstation and a chair. The chambers are unfurnished, although several child-sized chairs and tables are available for use in the chambers or offices. Investigators are responsible for providing any furniture that might be needed beyond that which is currently available and for making any necessary changes to the furniture arrangements in the rooms.

Use of the rooms is limited to investigations that involve human subjects.

How Can I Reserve One of The Rooms?

Principal investigators who wish to use these rooms must complete a "Reservation Request Form" and submit it to the Waisman Early Childhood Research Laboratories Committee. The reservation form should be completed and submitted electronically at http://www.waisman.wisc.edu/roomform.html.

When Should I Submit A Request?

Reservation requests should be submitted only after all other approvals (IRB, WECP) have been obtained. Requests can be submitted at any time of the year, but in order to facilitate comparative review and priority setting, the review committee will normally make assignments at the beginning of each semester in September, January and June. Due dates for this initial assignment are September 15, January 15, and June 15. This timeline should be viewed as a guideline; the committee will also attempt to meet the needs of investigators if their studies call for different startup dates.

How will Requests Be Acted Upon?

The committee will review all requests and attempt to accommodate as many as possible. In order to support the work of Waisman Center investigators*, preference will be given to investigations that are administered at the Waisman Center. Since the rooms are adjacent to the WECP, preference will also be given to investigations that involve children or families from WECP. Studies that involve children or families from other Waisman Center programs are also encouraged. (e.g., Early Intervention, Clinical Services Unit, Community TIES, etc.)

*A Waisman Investigator is an individual who is a member of a Unit of the Waisman Center Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Research Center (MRDDRC), or an individual who is working in cooperation with a member of a Unit of the MRDDRC.
