Rainbows, Stars, and Comets
Ages 3–4 and 4–5
These five day/week preschool classrooms are for a group of 15–17children in a mixed age grouping. Two full‐time teachers and a full‐time assistant teacher staff the classroom.
The Star, Rainbow and Comet rooms provide a supportive and stimulating environment that fosters each child's social‐emotional, cognitive, language and physical development. Children have opportunities for free play, dramatic play, literacy activities, learning sign language, music, art, science, math and working with computers. We also offer special activities such as field trips and a movement/music program as part of the preschool experience.
Our program provides a balance of child‐directed and teacher‐directed activities. The following sample schedule illustrates a typical day:
- 7:30‐8:30 a.m. Arrival/free play
- 8:45 Circle time (introduction to the day, stories, show‐and‐tell)
- 9:00 Snack
- 9:15 Choice time/learning centers (art, science/discovery, blocks/construction/small manipulative toys, math, literacy, books/listening center, computer)
- 10:30 Small groups (teacher‐guided activities with four or five children)
- 11:00 Gym or outside play
- 11:30 Lunch
- 12:30 Quiet activities, nap/rest time
- 2:00 Wake up; gym or outside play
- 3:00 Snack
- 3:30 Afternoon circle time (introduction to afternoon projects, stories, games, music)
- 3:45 Afternoon project
- 4:15 Choice time/learning centers
- 5:15 Clean up, get ready to leave
- 5:30 End of school day
