About the Talk: In this talk, Dr. Meyer will show changes in the structure of families in the US and around the world and describe some of the dilemmas faced by governments in trying to craft family policies that will facilitate the economic well-being of children in contemporary families. He will reflect on things he had to learn on his journey, the limits of our current knowledge base, and what he’s hoping for the future.
About the Speaker: Daniel R. Meyer, Emeritus Professor, began his social work career assisting families applying for welfare benefits. After receiving his PhD, he joined the faculty of the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, focusing his research on understanding economically vulnerable families and the policies intended to support them. His work with collaborator Maria Cancian has changed child support policy in the US and the UK. His current work with Mia Hakovirta and others is changing family policy in Finland for those who share care of their children after divorce or separation. He is author of over 100 articles, the first Mary C. Jacoby Distinguished Professor, a Kellett awardee, and a member of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. He has nine grandchildren who delight him.
