Families Invited: Community Conversation on Down Syndrome & Autism
Families of children with Down syndrome are invited to join us for a community conversation at the Waisman Center. We are gathering caregivers to share experiences and perspectives about autism and developmental differences in children with Down syndrome. Many families have told us that it can sometimes be hard to tell whether certain behaviors are part of Down syndrome or might signal autism. Researchers at the Waisman Center are starting a project to improve how autism is recognized in children with Down syndrome, and we want to learn directly from families before we begin developing new screening questions. This session is simply an opportunity to listen and learn from your experiences. WHAT WE HOPE TO TALK ABOUT We’d love to hear about things like:- When you first noticed differences in your child’s development
- Experiences talking with doctors, therapists, or teachers about autism
- What felt helpful—or frustrating—when trying to get answers
- What you wish professionals understood about children with Down syndrome and autism
