Families Invited: Community Conversation on Down Syndrome & Autism
Families of children with Down syndrome are invited to join us for a community conversation at the Waisman Center. We are gathering caregivers to share experiences and perspectives about autism and developmental differences in children with Down syndrome.
Many families have told us that it can sometimes be hard to tell whether certain behaviors are part of Down syndrome or might signal autism. Researchers at the Waisman Center are starting a project to improve how autism is recognized in children with Down syndrome, and we want to learn directly from families before we begin developing new screening questions. This session is simply an opportunity to listen and learn from your experiences.
WHAT WE HOPE TO TALK ABOUT
We’d love to hear about things like:
- When you first noticed differences in your child’s development
- Experiences talking with doctors, therapists, or teachers about autism
- What felt helpful—or frustrating—when trying to get answers
- What you wish professionals understood about children with Down syndrome and autism
Your perspectives will help guide future work aimed at improving screening and support for families.
WHO CAN ATTEND
We welcome caregivers of children under the age of 18 with Down syndrome:
• With autism
• Without autism
• Or if autism has ever been a question
A mix of experiences and child ages will help us learn the most.
SESSION DETAILS
Location: Waisman Center (UW–Madison)
Date: Friday, April 10th, 12-1pm for 60 minutes | Lunch will be provided
We know your time is valuable and will provide $50/family compensation for time/travel Participation is completely voluntary and this is not a research study session—just an opportunity for conversation and shared experiences.
