Former UW SMPH student pens NEJM article about PICU experience

Dr. Erica Andrist, clinical assistant professor at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, was a UW School of Medicine and Public Health student who rotated through the UW PICU between 2011–2012. She is currently a pediatric intensivist at the University of Michigan. Dr. Andrist recently had an experience with a medical student that made her recall her own experiences as a medical student in the PICU at the UW. She wrote a reflection piece about it, “What I Do Not Tell the Medical Student,” which was published in the March 21/28 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Andrist recently wrote to Dr. Pelin Cengiz and let her know that she was the attending at the foot of the bed in this essay. Dr. Andrist ended her email with the following: “It feels vaguely melodramatic to thank someone for changing your life, but that moment was the clincher for me, and I have never looked back. Thank you for being so formatively aspirational for me.”
