Norman Drinkwater, a UW-Madison professor of oncology, and Jan Greenberg, a UW-Madison professor of social work, have been named associate vice chancellors in the Office of Research and Graduate Education. Greenberg will lead the area of social studies while Drinkwater will lead the biological sciences.
Following UW-Madison search processes, the appointments, announced this week by Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (VCRGE) Marsha Mailick, are effective immediately. Both Drinkwater and Greenberg have been serving in the roles on an interim basis.
“Jan and Norman have tremendous research and leadership experience here at UW-Madison, and I am extremely grateful and excited to have their talents and wise counsel in the office of the VCRGE”, says Mailick.
Drinkwater joined the UW-Madison faculty in 1982. He served as chair of the Department of Oncology for 16 years and directed the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research from 1992 to 2008. He also held the position of associate director of laboratory programs for the Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center.
In his new role, Drinkwater will oversee many aspects of UW–Madison’s biological research portfolio, including coordinating the biological sciences component of the WARF gift, advising the vice chancellor for research and graduate education on divisional research issues, and serving as the primary point of contact for any issues in the biological sciences.
Greenberg, who also directs the UW-Madison School of Social Work, joined the faculty in 1987. In addition to his role leading the school, he has held numerous administrative posts on campus. He served as interim associate dean for social studies in the Graduate School and directed the UW-Madison National Institute of Mental Health Predoctoral Training Program in Family Caregiving and Mental Health Services from 2004 to 2010. He also chaired the doctoral program for the School of Social Work from 2000 to 2004.
As associate vice chancellor for research and graduate education in social studies, Greenberg will coordinate the social sciences element of the annual WARF gift and advise the vice chancellor for research and graduate education on divisional research issues and serve as the primary point of contact for any issues in the social studies.
